Ghada Amer #9

"Een afgebrand kerkgebouw in zuid-westelijk Harlem, New York, is door SO-IL verbouwd tot woon- en werkruimte van kunstenaar Ghada Amer. De nieuwe façade is een geabstraheerde versie van de voormalige gevel, waarbij de openingen voor ruim binnenvallend daglicht zorgen.

Het verbouwde kerkgebouw aan de Manhattan Avenue in Harlem huisvest sinds enige tijd de Harlem Artist Studio. SO-IL transformeerde de bestaande constructie tot woonruimte, atelier, archief, kantoor, galerie en ontmoetingsruimte voor de kunstenaar en haar partner.

Met de gedane ingrepen heeft het architectenbureau enerzijds willen inspelen op het erfgoed; anderzijds heeft het – “op een stoutmoedige manier”, zegt SO-IL – een bijzondere en moderne ruimte voor actuele cultuur en creativiteit willen realiseren. In totaal biedt de nieuwe Harlem Artist Studio 540 m2 aan ruimte.

Een ingrijpende actie was de realisatie van een nieuwe, opvallend gedetailleerde gevel. Hij vormt een abstractie van de voormalige kerkgevel, die overigens alleen rechthoekige ramen bevatte. Met de toevoeging van boogramen refereert SO-IL aan op de bouwstijl van de buurt, “zonder de afleidende ornamentatie”."

Billed as a match between two heavyweights, the pair donned boxing gloves to advertise the show—a clash between the old guard and the new."

" The Manhattan property where Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat lived and worked will be taken over by actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie.

The deal for the property, located at 57 Great Jones Street, was confirmed today by John Roesch and Garrett Kelly, both directors at the real estate agency Meridian Capital Group. Jolie will rent the space for her latest creative venture, Atelier Jolie, under long-term commercial use for eight years.

The interior space features 6,600 square feet of space across three floors. The exterior of the building is adorned in street art, and Jolie will keep it that way as a public tribute to Basquiat, who started his career as one half of the graffiti art duo SAMO.

Basquiat rented the second-floor space from Warhol shortly after they first met. Warhol originally bought the building in 1970.

The property was previously on the market with Meridian Capital Group for $60,000 per month for a minimum of 10 years."
