Sidney Nolan #3

"It was here in this tithe barn (now the Gallery) that Nolan could sometimes be found, strapped to a bosun’s chair, swinging above a large canvas, with two spray cans in each hand. Nolan used it as a secondary studio for large-scale works. He had rigged up ropes from the beams to which he attached himself so that he could swing on them above enormous canvasses on the floor, working quickly, as he had always done.
On 2 May 1986, Sidney records that he is painting spray-painted canvases including an aboriginal girl. By 18 July he had finished so many large spray-painted works that he records photographing them outside The Rodd. Nolan stands proudly in front of them, wearing his distinctive stripped apron, which is still in his studio today."
