Miroslaw Balka #2

Studio, Otwock, Poland.

"In the early 1990s Mirosław Bałka transformed his family house in Otwock into a studio.

In his practice the artist frequently draws on the memory of the place which changed its original function, its dimensions, its geographic coordinates. Cast models of the house’s walls and floors become sculptures. Materials found on site, such as wood, linoleum or ash, continue to exist in Bałka’s works.

Over recent years, the studio has gradually lost its function, ceasing to be a working space. The “Otwock” project does not tend to historicize it. Rather, it seeks to explore the potential of the studio as a place of artistic practice and a point of reference.

Its future remains open." (bron: Otwock Studio)
