Dieter Roth #3

Dieter Roth in his studio in Basel, Switzerland, in 1996.

"From the 1970s until his death in 1998, the German-born Swiss artist lived and worked in cities like Mosfellsbaer, Seydisfjordur, Basel and Vienna, but the one constant, no matter where he set up shop, were his worktables with their protective mats. These sheets of gray cardboard soaked up the life of the studio, some of it deliberate (say, a drawing), some of it accidental (the ring left by a cup of coffee or a glass of water), until they were retired from duty and hung on the wall.

A selection of these ‘‘Tischmatten,’’ as they are called, are at Hauser & Wirth in New York from Oct. 6 to 30. Some of them inevitably look like glorified doodles — the assumption being, perhaps, that every mark the artist makes has equal value, aesthetic or otherwise. The best examples, however, vibrate with the effortless beauty of happenstance." (bron: The New York Times)
