Kunstgiesserei St.Gallen: Andrea Büttner

"Untitled (Moss), 2014
Plaster casting, 120 × 50 × 70 cm

The artist Andrea Büttner came to us with the request to scan and enlarge a small piece of moss. As a recurring motif in her work, Büttner has a personal connection to the delicate plant—she collects it herself on walls, bricks, and statues, observes and films it, plants it. For the exhibition at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the artist took several small samples from our moss container (an experimental facility for cultivating moss in the Sittertal) to then enlarge them to the dimensions of a “stool.” Scanning the moss samples turned out to be a tricky challenge, since it was only possible to partially capture the spaces between the tiny individual hairs. By means of an elaborate process of data processing, it was possible to clean up the scan data so that a closed body was created. This was then printed in PMMA, a 3D printing technique that we offer in-house. From this positive, a negative was then taken and finally cast in plaster. The plaster casting was then presented in the exhibition." (bron: Kunstgiesserei St.Gallen)
